Brittney Appleby (she/they) is a queer interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker with a primary focus in experimental analog film and photo techniques. Brittney holds a Diploma in Visual Arts from Langara College and graduated with their BFA majoring in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2021. She currently resides on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam First Nations, otherwise known as Vancouver, BC.

Brittney’s work spans across multiple analog film and photo mediums including 16mm, super 8 motion picture film and 35mm, 120, large format, polaroid, cyanotype and wet plate collodion photography. They are inspired by the materiality of analogue practices and incorporate their background in painting, drawing and printmaking into their films and photographs. Common themes Brittney explores in their work are the body, chronic illness, trauma and memory. They see celluloid film as an alternative to the canvas and believes that experimental film techniques worksas a metaphor for the disabled body.

In 2023 Brittney completed mentorships with Geoffrey Wallang in wet plate collodion photography and experimental 16mm film processes with Lindsay McIntyre. Most recently, they finished a mentorship with Jack Beatty at Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society’s Analog Centre on traditional photo and cine film processes, darkroom management and silver gelatin printing. Brittney is passionate about accessibility in the arts and offers workshops and one on one teaching as a means to make analog processes more accessible. They have taught workshops with Cineworks, EPFC North, Still Moon Arts Society, Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture, Capture Photography Festival, Surrey Art Gallery, Slice of Life, Broadway Youth Resource Centre, Duplex, Wildfires Book Shop, Raven’s Veil, Copley Community Orchard and RestFest Film Festival.
